Listed below are the areas of practice in which a registered dental assistant must attend a board approved course and receive certification from the Tennessee Board of
Dentistry prior to such providing service:
•        Coronal Polishing Certification
•        Dental Radiology Certification
•        Monitoring Nitrous Oxide Certification
•        Sealant Application Certification
•        Prosthetic Function Certification
•        Restorative Function Certification

It is important that the employer dentist, supervising dentist and licensed hygienist or registered dental assistant check his/her license and registration to make sure that it
accurately reflects those additional duties which the individual is legally allowed to perform.

Certification by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB CDA)*
Dental Assistants who are Certified by the Dental Assisting National Board must also comply with the registration requirements of the Tennessee Board of Dentistry to practice in
Tennessee. Please contact the Tennessee Board of Dentistry for more information.

For those dental assistants who meet the eligibility and examination requirements, certification may be earned in one or more of the following areas:

Certified Dental Assistant – CDA
Certified Orthodontic Assistant – COA
Certified Preventive Functions Dental Assistant - CPFDA

In addition to these three national credentials, DANB offers Certificates of Competency in:

Radiation Health and Safety
Infection Control
Coronal Polish
Sealants
Topical Anesthetic
Topical Fluoride


IMPORTANT NOTE: These certifications do not exempt the certificant from registration as a dental assistant in Tennessee, nor do they automatically allow the certificant to legally
