Tennessee Registered Dental Assistant
(a) Definition - A dental assistant who has received a registration from the Board pursuant to rule 0460-04-.02.
(b) Scope of Practice - A registered dental assistant may perform those additional procedures for which they have received certification by the
Tennessee Board of Dentistry, i.e. Dental Radiology, Sealants, Monitoring Nitrous Oxide, Coronal Polishing, Restorative Functions, Prosthodontic
Functions as provided by Rule 0460-04-.08 under the direct supervision of a dentist. See Rules Governing Dental Assistants

Certification by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB CDA)*
Dental Assistants who are Certified by the Dental Assisting National Board must also comply with the registration requirements of the Tennessee
Board of Dentistry to practice in Tennessee. Please contact the Tennessee Board of Dentistry for more information.
For those dental assistants who meet the eligibility and examination requirements, DANB certification may be earned in one or more of the
following areas:
Certified Dental Assistant – CDA
Certified Orthodontic Assistant – COA
Certified Preventive Dental Assistant - CPDA
In addition to these three national credentials, DANB offers Certificates of Competency in:
Radiation Health and Safety
Infection Control
Coronal Polish
Sealants
Topical Anesthetic
Topical Fluoride
I*MPORTANT NOTE: These certifications do not exempt the certificant from registration as a dental assistant in Tennessee, nor do they
